Building Consent Processing Officer - Building Services

Dunedin has some large building projects taking place such as the new Dunedin Hospital. In addition, our heritage buildings are being revitalised, commercial buildings are being upgraded, earthquake strengthening projects are underway, and new dwellings are on the rise.

Be part of this exciting future by joining our Building Services team as a Building Consent Processing Officer. Balancing customer service and a regulatory function, a Building Control Processing Officer is office based and works closely with the team in ensuring that building consents are processed and granted in accordance with the Building Act and Regulations. This includes multi-disciplinary aspects of building design such as building construction, plumbing and drainage, fire safety and accessibility.

To be shortlisted for this role you will ideally have an appropriate qualification and multiple years' experience in New Zealand in either:

  • Building control work within another Building Consent Authority or;
  • Plumbing and drainage or;
  • Building/construction or;
  • Architecture/design.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have many of the following:

  • Knowledge of the Building Act, Regulations and the Building Code
  • A desire to gain further qualifications/ongoing learning
  • An attention to detail and accuracy when interpreting building plans
  • Computer skills at an intermediate knowledge for Microsoft products
  • Ability to problem solve and adapt to changing customer requirements
  • Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written

You must hold or attain within 3 years of role commencement an appropriate NZQA qualification as per regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006. Where the Council funds the training of the appropriate qualification, you will be financially bonded for two years post attainment.
